Greetings !

This week the book trailer passed 1,000,000 views, thanks to tweets from many of you, and from authors like Guy Kawasaki and Daniel Pink who have been very supportive of Better and Faster. As we narrow in on the March 17th launch date, I wanted to share a couple interesting stories I wrote about in the book. Not an excerpt, but more of a quick overview of some of my favorites.

For this week, imagine you wanted to make a charity marathon for a cause you care about. How would you do it? Most people would start out by looking at how other marathons are run locally for inspiration to make their own event bigger and better.

That's not how Will Dean went about it. He thought about how weird it is that a marathon is a "race." By definition, a race has one winner. So, does a marathon have one winner and 20,000 losers? Most marathon runners will tell you they don't do it for the ranking, they do it to get that feeling of completion. So why then does a marathon have to be a timed race?

Will zeroed in on the feeling of "completion" and accelerated it by making an un-timed extreme obstacle course where people run through fire, swim through mud bogs and survive (mild) electrocution. At the end of the course there's an epic party with cold beer, free tattoos and all of your fellow obstacle course participants. By the next week, you'll even get the photos of your rugged adventure for easy social media sharing.

Will's event is Tough Mudder. The rugged race racked in $70 million in just two years, teaching you that you don't need to make a bigger, better marathon. Instead, you need to rethink what experience it is that people actually want.

That's one example of how to use acceleration, a key pattern that helps you zero in on one particular aspect of your service to then accelerate it. In the book, I dive into about 50 or so examples of pattern based opportunities and how you can apply the patterns to your business.

Enjoy!
